Stephen Colbert steps up for a lot of the film's non-Jerri funny moments. On top of that, Sedaris' shtick can grow old at times, but the major characters around her (specifically the high school students) are not funny enough to pick up the slack. Like many of these character-based comedy films, it often feels as if there is more story than necessary to set up the laughs. All of this remains true to the after-school elements that the show is based from, but as the plot thickens, the humor dulls. The usual elements are here, from the mean-spirited girls aiming to ruin Jerri to the geeks who want her to see what's special on the inside. She manages to fit in with a group of outcasts, but quickly abandons them once the cool kids trick her into betraying them in exchange for some time with a jock hunk. Jerri struggles to fit in with the high school kids, which produces mostly mixed results comedically. Unfortunately, once the set-up is out of the way, Strangers heads down a familiar pathway for these kinds of sketch-based comedies. Jerri's time in the pen has given her a taste for same-sex sexual flings, and her overbite and under-groomed exterior mixed with repulsive come-ons manages to offend both sexes equally in some disgusting, but amusing, moments. Jerri's uncomfortable assimilation into mainstream society and eventually high school offers a lot of fruitful comedy territory, such as a dinner with the not-so-loving fam, in which a comatose Dad is propped up at the dinner table. The first 25-minutes of Strangers offers a lot of laughs. The results are mixed, with broad-over-the-top humor as well as random, off-beat moments that feel geared towards fans only. Dinello and crew do their best to create a film that maintains a balance for those who loved the show and those who've never heard of it or seen it. The concept originated out of those after school specials most of us remember from our childhood as well as a documentary from 1970 entitled The Trip Back about Florrie Fisher, a 50-year-old ex-prostitute, ex-junkie and ex-con. Strangers includes an impressive list of cameos and bit players that includes Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Allison Janney, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Sir Ian Holm.įans of the show should appreciate the origin story to everyone's favorite "boozer, user and loser" from Comedy Central past. Stephen Colbert returns as clueless teacher Chuck Noblet and Paul Dinello tackles the triple threat as Geoffrey Jellineck as well as director and co-writer with Sedaris and Colbert. She heads back to the place where all the problems started, high school, but soon finds that fitting back in at forty-seven is a bit trickier than she might have imagined. Jerri decides that she must revisit her troubled youth and fix all of her past problems, hoping that the self-improvement will awake her slumbering papa. After being released from prison, Blank returns to the house where she grew up, only to find her father (Dan Hedaya) in a coma and her new mom Sara (Deborah Rush) less-than-thrilled to welcome Blank into their happy home. A sort-of prequel to the show, Strangers With Candy explores the origin story of forty-seven-year-old ex-con, junky-whore Jerri Blank (Amy Sedaris).
